Here is Polly Elephant's Ear or
Alocasia 'Amazonica'. This has been outside under the trees for the summer and was slightly neglected but look how big she got. Look at the last photo, it’s when I repotted it a couple of months ago. I love seeing the before and after growth.

She got some morning sun then dappled shade until late afternoon as the sun went down.
Watered every other day outside but indoor over the winter I will let it get about half dry and then water thoroughly.
If I had used fertilizer more often when watering it would have gotten bigger but it only got fed twice. Oops!

Tradescantia nanouk requires bright indirect light. If the light is too dim, the leaf markings will fade. Keep the soil slightly moist and an important part of growing Tradescantia plants is pinching back the long, vining tendrils. Pinch back about a fourth of the plant to encourage branching and increase fullness.

This 6 inch hanging basket was started this spring with several small two node cuttings. It has been hanging in the dappled shade of a magnolia tree all summer and has just flourished.

Ready to bring it in for the winter and give it a chop to propagate more and make a bigger, fuller, basket.

Here are a few photos from around the landscaping. Plants are looking much better since it cooled down just a bit.
Much better in the 70-80 degree range instead of the 90-100 we did have. Fall is around the corner. That means a whole lot of plant moving is on the horizon. Definitely not ready for that yet.

Dracaena Marginata ‘tricolor’ is a more colorful version of the standard Dragon Tree. Care is generally the same.

This was repotted in the spring and has been sitting out under the trees getting dappled sunlight throughout the day and apparently loves it. I had two pots with two plants each that I combined into this one large ceramic pot and they have grown so much this summer. I was looking for a before photo but apparently didn’t take one.

A sure way to kill a dragon tree is to over-water it. Water the plant only when the soil is about 50% dry and then water it thoroughly although outside during summer I have watered it about every day or every other. The key is good draining soil and never allow it to sit in excess water in the saucer. I remove saucers while my plants are outside so they can drain freely.

As Dragon trees grow they will typically drop lower leaves although in ideal conditions I have seen them with leaves still on the trunks. Mine is young so it has leaves to the bottom and it gives it a full look which I like.

As summer starts to give way to fall there are many outdoor plants that will start to thrive again in the cooler temperatures. This Chenille plant however has been a steady bloomer all summer.

Great for hanging baskets, this is the popular "chenille plant" with fuzzy rose red catkins that droop from pendulous stems year round. Also a good choice for spilling out of window boxes.

I potted two very small 4 inch pots in this 12 inch basket in the spring. As you can see it has done extremely well. It is located in an area that gets full sun until early afternoon and then bright shade the rest of the day. I find this likes to be kept moist in its current location but once I move it in for the winter I will let it get semi dry between watering.

Yes, you can grow this as a houseplant and I have done this with one in the past. Inside they do require high light or it will not continuously bloom. They do make a striking statement in the house if given the proper conditions.

Just when you thought there wasn’t much excitement left in the garden as summer gives way to fall comes a nice surprise filled with knockout beauty and fragrance. Sweet autumn clematis (Clematis paniculata, Clematis terniflora) is one of the late-blooming clematis vines that features not only flowers different from most clematis, but also an unusually heady scent. It fills our back garden and makes you want to linger out in the garden a bit longer.

Small, pure white flowers emerge in August and September and by fall, become a silvery mass of fluffy seed heads. A prolific grower as well as bloomer, it can “take over” if left unchecked, so sweet autumn clematis is considered somewhat invasive by many. But when properly maintained, the vine can be a well-behaved asset to the garden at a time of year when pretty much everything else has stopped blooming.

A twining vine, it loves a support it can latch on to, such as chain link. Sweet autumn clematis blooms on new wood, and by mid-summer tiny buds begin to emerge. Most varieties of clematis will tolerate part shade, but this one seems to thrive on it.

This is a basket of Philodendron Adansonii I started with single leaf node cuttings a few months ago. It has grown incredibly fast. But while I was taking this pic I couldn’t help but include the incredible Swedish Ivy hanging behind it.

These two enjoy the dappled morning and midday sun they get under the trees and I check daily for water needs and some fertilizer every two weeks or monthly depending on the time of year.

This Birkin sent out two reverted leaves in a row so I was just going to let it do it’s thing and see what happened. It surprised me this weekend with a very beautiful high white leaf.😁

Alocasia Regal Shield. I got this in plant mail June 11th and did a repot from its 6 inch plastic pot to a slightly larger clay pot a few weeks later and put it outside under a tree.

The first two pictures are from today, swipe to the last to see what it looked like the day it arrived.

Care for this has been quite simple in the heat of summer I have watered it just about every day. I mixed in a bit of slow release fertilizer when I potted it so I have not given it any extra but I’m going to give it a boost this weekend I think.

Ms. Praying Mantis is stalking bugs for me. I do not like to use spray on my plants unless I absolutely have to. Since I keep almost all my plants outside during the summer months the beneficial insects help me out.

My Birkin’s newest leaf, I was afraid it was going to revert when the previous one came out all green. This all green leaf was the first to come out after it came home so I was very happy that the newest came back with a lot of white.

Not enough light from shipping and being in a lower light store must have been the reason.

This is Alocasia ‘Imperial Red’. With this one it’s all about the red stems. Just received 3 small starter plants last week and they have already started sending out new leaves.

Soil: Well-drained. Keep moist but not soggy.

There will be loads of puppy pics coming soon along with my normal plant posts. We have so much going on all at once it’s been an adjustment to the normal routine.

It is the 4th of July, Independence Day celebrations are already in full swing around here. Fireworks started before 6AM this morning so it will definitely be a day of it.
